Osteopathy for Pregnancy & Postpartum in Barrie
Gentle, hands-on care as your body changes
Pregnancy changes the way your body carries weight, moves and sleeps, and recovering after birth brings changes of its own. Ivan Penuela-Chacon, our Osteopathic Manual Practitioner, brings 25 years of experience as a medical doctor in Colombia and uses gentle manual techniques to ease discomfort and help your body adapt, before and after your baby arrives.
How osteopathy can help
Support through pregnancy and postpartum
As your baby grows, your posture shifts, your ligaments loosen and your hips, pelvis and lower back take on more load. That can show up as aches that make it hard to get comfortable, walk or sleep.
At your first visit, Ivan asks about your pregnancy or birth, your symptoms and what makes them better or worse. He then assesses how your back, pelvis, hips and ribs are moving and treats with gentle techniques such as soft tissue work, stretching and joint mobilization. Your position on the table is adjusted to keep you comfortable throughout.
After birth, osteopathy can help your body recover from pregnancy and delivery, and from the new strain of feeding, lifting and carrying your baby. No referral is needed, and osteopathy can work alongside care from your midwife or doctor.
Osteopathy may help if you have
- Low back or hip pain during pregnancy
- Pelvic girdle or sacroiliac (SI) joint pain
- Sciatica-type pain down the leg
- Rib, mid-back or neck tension
- Back, neck and shoulder strain after birth from feeding and carrying
Osteopathy works alongside your prenatal care, not in place of it. If you have a high-risk pregnancy, check with your midwife or doctor before booking. Seek medical care right away for bleeding, severe pain, fluid loss, reduced baby movement or any symptom that worries you.
